After a good night’s rest, the York West Hawks were back in action at 9:00 AM on Sunday, December 29th in Florenceville for a semi-final match-up against the Woodstock Ice Wolves; who had placed fourth in the Carleton tournament standings to earn their birth. Carrying a short bench featuring only 10 skaters, it took less than 4-minutes for those feisty Hawks to break the “Ice”. Jonathyn Oland-Simon picked up where he left off against Plaster Rock the prior day with an unassisted tally at 8:46 of the first. The game remained extremely tight, however, and while the Hawks maintained consistent pressure on the Ice Wolves, they couldn’t solve Goalie Elijah Matheson to break things open until Will Shaw and Jonathyn Oland-Simon hooked up on a great passing play at 5:12 of the second frame. Nice hands Will! If the Hawks thought that was the end of the contest, they should have informed the Ice Wolves, who surged back a mere 50-seconds later with a great goal of their own from #19 Colby Henry. The Hawks, undaunted, rested control of the game, for good this time, with a tally from Denver Pike at 3:27 of the 2nd (Will Shaw assisting) and Denver was not done there…he worked his magic once again to record his first multi-goal game performance of the season (once again on a setup from Captain Will Shaw). Denver’s second goal came with 9:34 remaining on the clock in the third frame, and he could not have picked a bigger moment to find his scoring touch for the Hawks who finished the game with a strong defensive effort to take the semi-final 4-1!
For his superb efforts, Denver Pike was awarded the Game MVP honors; with Luke McLellan, who seemed to be everywhere on the ice in the game; thwarting the Ice Wolves at every turn, was the clear Hard Hat candidate!
Nicely done gents, and congratulations Hawks on your second Final appearance in as many tournaments…OUTSTANDING STUFF!!!
