After the narrow escape from defeat on Friday evening the
Hawks returned to the arena for the second day of the tournament in a more
subdued mood than usual. “Let’s leave that game behind us and focus on
winning this match! You can’t take it for granted that you are going to
win these games. We need to play like a team, no more rushing and pass
that puck!”
With those words of encouragement from Coach MacPhee the team
hit the ice to warm up. The whistle blows, the puck drops and the game is
underway! And what a game, the Hawks let loose with a flurry of offensive
play and the KV goalie is blistered with shot after shot until Keaton MacPhee
blasts a hard wrister too hot to handle past him on the blocker side.
What a great pass Ramin! The rest of the period passes with the KV goalie doing an
incredible job of shutting the door on numerous quality opportunities.
Early in the second, KV comes on strong getting a few shots on goal but not
solving Justin’s challenge oriented positioning. Kudos to Austin Mills as
well whose strong stick in front of the net dashes the hopes of the KV forwards
lurking there. The second goal of the game comes from behind the net as
Will Shaw pokes the puck through the gap behind the goalie. There would
be no looking back from here, as Will breaks free two more times to make it a
hat trick.
We also saw some great offensive play from Shane Fox and
Keaton MacPhee who both raced from one end of the rink to the other, always in
the play and ready to get a shot on net.
Ultimately, we saw everything we wanted to see in this game:
Strong back checking, good forward positioning, aggressive defensive puck
clearing and quality passing. Check the game highlight reel here
and you’ll see what we mean! This game could easily have been 10-0 if it
weren’t for the KV goalie who did a great job throughout.
The MVP of the game was Ramin Imran, who gave his all in
this one in both ends of the ice; with the hard hat going to Austin Mills who
showed tremendous commitment by gutting this one out for his teammates while
still feeling the effects of the flu that kept him out of Friday night’s game.
