Dave Cartwright Cup Opener - YW Hawks vs FYHA Kings January 31, 2014 (Jeff Shaw)

The Hawks arrived at the arena in the early afternoon on Friday Jan 31 to open the Dave Cartwright Memorial Tournament. Spirits were high and the mood in the dressing room was excited. We thought it was the excitement of the hockey but soon came to realize that it was at least half about missing Math class!

The coaching staff asked for a strong opener and that’s exactly what we received. The boys played a dominant game from the outset with solid defensive play. Denver Pike opened the scoring late in the first period on a neat pass from Will Shaw. This was quickly followed 2 minutes later by a sharp angle goal by Trent Haines after digging the puck out of the corner. The second period flew by scoreless with the FYHA goalie turning aside numerous opportunities to keep the lead down to 2. Finally with 3 minutes left in the period a fast rush by Duncan Christie leaves the FYHA defense standing still, and the third goal of the game in the back of the net. This would be followed in the third period by two more breakaway goals from Will Shaw and Duncan Christie at the midway point to put the game out of reach for the Kings.

The Kings tried to figure a way through to our goalie but were mauled by our defense at every turn. If they did manage to slip into our zone, more often than not, our back checking forwards caught them near the blue line resulting in minimal shots through the game. MVP honors were awarded to Jonathyn Oland-Simon who was a game time decision after being sidelined from two previous practices leading up to the tournament, and missing several days of school that same week with a terrible respiratory flu. The Hawks were very fortunate that Jonathyn, a premium defensive force when healthy, was able to find his way back just in the nick of time! The Hard Hat was awarded to Trent Haines for his DETERMINATION and tenacity throughout. The opening game of any tournament is important, and really set the Hawks in the right direction for the weekend to come.

Well done Team!
